Aslan Selecting a suitable PVC plasticizer is not simply a matter of replacing an existing plasticizer with DOTP or choosing a product labeled as “phthalate-free.” For industrial buyers, the selection should be determined by destination market regulations, application requirements, customer restricted substance requirements, and the required performance of the final PVC product during processing and service.

Some traditional ortho-phthalate plasticizers have received regulatory attention because certain substances may migrate from PVC products and have been associated with health or environmental concerns. As a result, regulators in different markets have introduced restrictions or other control measures for specific phthalates and applications.
For many buyers, environmentally conscious plasticizer selection is closely associated with non-phthalate formulations. However, environmental selection is not simply about whether a plasticizer is non-phthalate or bio-based; it also means avoiding restricted phthalates while matching migration, volatility, low-temperature flexibility, heat resistance, and service-life requirements.
Non-ortho-phthalate (DOTP) is one example in our range. Yuanyide DOTP is a terephthalate plasticizer with low volatility, excellent migration resistance, extraction resistance, thermal stability, and electrical insulation properties. Its specification requires at least 99.5% ester content and a minimum volume resistivity of 2×10¹² Ω·m.
A regulatory-compliant PVC formulation should also consider how well the plasticizer remains in the PVC over time. Excessive migration can contribute to surface stickiness, blooming, hardness changes, or loss of flexibility. Volatility becomes especially important in products exposed to heat for long periods.
This is why the best plasticizer depends on the actual service conditions rather than a single environmental label.

Environmental requirements are therefore not limited to choosing a non-phthalate plasticizer. Buyers may also need to consider restricted substances, migration, volatility, renewable content, and the specific requirements of the finished product.
Before choosing a plasticizer, determine where the PVC product will be sold and how it will be classified. For products entering the EU, buyers should check relevant REACH requirements, including registration, SVHC Candidate List obligations, authorization, and Annex XVII restrictions, while confirming the responsible importer or Only Representative, tonnage, and intended use.
For electrical and electronic equipment, RoHS may also be relevant. The EU RoHS Directive currently restricts ten substances in covered electrical and electronic equipment, including four phthalates: DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP.
Large brands, automotive companies, retailers, and industrial buyers may have their own Restricted Substance Lists, or RSLs, that go beyond the legal minimum.
Before reformulating, ask the customer about restricted phthalates, heavy metals, VOC limits, odor, migration, and any application-specific requirements.

DOTP is a practical starting point for many general flexible PVC applications. Yuanyide lists its applications across cables, films, flooring, artificial leather, automotive interiors, hoses, and other PVC products.
For artificial leather, the decision should also consider migration and surface behavior. Plasticizer migration may affect surface appearance, flexibility retention, and hand feel of artificial leather products. Yuanyide recommends DOTP, TOTM, and DOA as different formulation directions for artificial and synthetic leather.
Cable formulations often require a balance of electrical insulation, heat aging, low volatility, migration resistance, and low-temperature flexibility.
DOTP provides strong electrical insulation and low volatility, while TOTM is better suited to formulations that place greater emphasis on heat resistance and long-term plasticizer retention. Yuanyide TOTM is a low-migration, low-volatility primary plasticizer with a specified minimum open-cup flash point of 240°C and is used in heat-resistant cables and other durable PVC products.
The plasticizer that should be used for manufacturing low-temperature resistant PVC products must have high low-temperature flexibility.
The Yuanyide DOA plasticizer is used for the manufacture of cold-resistant PVC films, insulating wires and cables, automobile interiors, outdoor pipes, adhesives and sealants. The specification requirement of Yuanyide DOA ester content is ≥99.5%, and acid value is ≤0.07 mgKOH/g.
For more demanding cold-resistant applications, DOS offers good low-temperature flexibility and low volatility and is particularly suitable for cold-resistant cables, artificial leather, films, and adhesives.
For heat-resistant cable insulation, automotive components, gaskets, sheets, and other long-life products, TOTM may provide a better performance direction because its design emphasizes low volatility, migration resistance, thermal stability, and durability.
ATBC is used in certain sensitive applications, including some food-contact, medical, and consumer product formulations, when the final formulation meets applicable regulatory requirements.
Yuanyide lists Acetyl Tributyl Citrate (ATBC), CAS 77-90-7, for PVC, cellulose resins, and synthetic rubber, including films and non-toxic PVC granulation.
Epoxidized Soybean Oil (ESBO) works differently. It is a bio-based plasticizer and stabilizer derived from epoxidized soybean oil. Yuanyide’s ESBO offers PVC compatibility, low volatility, minimal migration, and thermal and light stability, and can be used in films, sheets, artificial leather, flooring, wires, cables, and other PVC products.
These materials should not be treated as interchangeable with DOTP, DOA, or TOTM. Each has a different role in formulation design.
Before approving a plasticizer supplier, request the Technical Data Sheet, Safety Data Sheet, and Certificate of Analysis. Check the chemical identity, CAS number, ester content, acid value, moisture, color, density, and other properties relevant to the formulation.
The test report should correspond to the actual material being purchased. Check the product name, report date, test scope, and issuing laboratory.
